Candles are handy items that could delineate different things on different occasions- birthdays, weddings, religious celebrations, etcetera. Although we are not oblivious of how they are used but there are some facts (about candles) that might have escaped your attention. Hence, we shall be sharing some of these facts forthwith:

• Beyond illuminating dark areas, candles are also used as a totem for philosophical enlightenment, spiritual and moral uprightness and also scientific education.
• The fragrance of candles greatly influences consumers' buying decisions. It is good to know that cinnamon was about the first substance that was used in giving candles scent. Several fragrance oils [like chamomile, lavender, etcetera] are now used in scenting candles.
• The word 'candle' was derived from Latin words 'candere' and 'candela' which means 'to shine'. Candela is the S.I unit used when measuring the luminous intensity of light.
• A person who makes candle is called 'Chandler'- derived from French word, 'chandelier'.
• Contrary to popular belief, freezing a candle does not make burn for a long(er) period. And this is based on the findings of the National Candle Association of the United States of America.
• Candles- specifically the candle clock and graduated candle- were used for measuring time.
• The custom of putting candles on birthday cakes was a tradition that started in ancient Greece.
