Candles are handy items that could delineate different things on different occasions- birthdays, weddings, religious celebrations, etcetera.   • The word 'candle' was derived from Latin words 'candere' and 'candela' which means 'to shine'. Candela is the S.I unit used when measuring the luminous intensity of light.
  • A person who makes candle is called 'Chandler'- derived from French word, 'chandelier'.
  • Contrary to popular belief, freezing a candle does not make burn for a long(er) period. And this is based on the findings of the National Candle Association of the United States of America.
  • Candles- specifically the candle clock and graduated candle- were used for measuring time.
  • The custom of putting candles on birthday cakes was a tradition that started in ancient Greece.
